Words, meanings and synonyms come from WordNet, Copyright 2006 by Princeton University, and pronunciations from ipa-dict. Both are held on this site, so an ordinary lookup asks nothing of anyone else.
For a word they do not have — a recent coinage, a name, a proper noun — the search falls back to Wiktionary, Wikipedia and dictionaryapi.dev, Wikipedia and Wiktionary; word origins from Etymology Explorer and etytree; and spelling suggestions to Datamuse. Only then does a word you type leave your device. Word origins always do: that part is not held here.
